Chapter History

Josiah Howell Chapter was chartered on April 13, 2024 in West Plains, MO. We started with 20 regular members and 4 dual members.

The Ozark Spring Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, member Vivian Brake passed along a dream that she had of establishing a Sons of the American Revolution Chapter in West Plains. When the Ozark Spring Chapter DAR celebrated Vivian’s 40th year as a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, chapter members gathered along with her family. At that time Vivian’s husband Dale, son Scott, and grandson Nicholas were present and she shared that all were members of the Sons of the American Revolution.

After several years, the Ozark Spring Chapter DAR started the process of establishing a SAR chapter in West Plains. Many phone calls to State SAR Officers were made with Missouri State SAR President Michael Robertson and First Vice President Gene Henry. In April of 2023, Missouri State SAR Officers and members attended a meeting of those interested in establishing a SAR Chapter in West Plains. Ozark Spring Chapter DAR members, working on this project, were advised they had one year to get a membership of 15 members to charter the chapter. DAR members, along with the assistance of Steve Perkins, from Ozark Mountain Chapter SAR, provided application submissions for new members.

So, on April 13, 2024 the Josiah Howell Chapter SAR was chartered. Missouri State President David Shaul installed Wayne Jones as the first President. Executive Vice President Gene Henry conducted the remainder of the first meeting of Josiah Howell Chapter SAR with officers installed. Members of the Ozark Spring Chapter DAR provided the cake and refreshments for the event. SAR members from around the state were present for the event. At the time of the chartering Josiah Howell had 20 regular members and 4 dual members.

The chapter voted to take the name Josiah Howell Chapter SAR from the fact that Josiah Howell was one of the first to locate to the West Plains area. Along with the Josiah Howell Chapter SAR being established, so was the Josiah Howell Auxiliary Chapter SAR – there to support the SAR Chapter. Josiah Howell Chapter SAR is serving throughout the area to promote patriotism and the communities, educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our country. Vivian, your dream has come true!
