Knight Essay Contest. The contest is open to all US Citizen and Legal Resident students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools in that same grade range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To participate, students must submit<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>an original 800 to 1,200-word essay based on an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Each student\u2019s essay will be judged based on its historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar and spelling, and documentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contest is conducted in three phases: the local chapter, state-level society, and national phases. The contest must be entered through an SAR chapter near the student\u2019s residence. Go to MOSSAR.ORG&gt; Membership &gt; Local Chapters for the chapter nearest you. In some cases, the contest may be entered at the state level. Only one entry per student is permitted per contest year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A complete set of rules, along with the application for both the applicant and the sponsoring SAR members, can be found by going to SAR.ORG&gt; Education&gt; Youth Contest Awards &gt; George and Stella Knight Essay Contest. Please be aware that the local application deadline dates may vary, so interested applicants should reach out to the Ozark Gateway Chapter for further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The completed APPLICATION must be submitted along with the essay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUE DATE IS<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>DECEMBER 11, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contest entries must be submitted as PDF files attached to emails. The essay must have four parts: 1) title page, 2) essay pages, 3) bibliography or works cited, and 4) applicant\u2019s biography. The title page, bibliography, and applicant\u2019s biography must be listed on separate pages and no reference to the applicant\u2019s name or information can be part of the essay pages or bibliography. Please follow these rules exactly. Essays that do not conform to the rules may be immediately disqualified. The judging is conducted by three MOSSAR members and one Advanced Placement English teacher according to the National requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) Title Page \u2013 The title page must include the following:<br \/>\u2022 Title of the Essay<br \/>\u2022 Applicant\u2019s name, grade, address, phone number &amp; email<br \/>\u2022 Applicant\u2019s high school\u2019s name, address &amp; phone number<br \/>\u2022 Statement on how the applicant learned about the contest (if from the Internet, include the URL of the website)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) Essay Pages \u2013 The essay must:<br \/>\u2022 Minimum of 800 and a maximum of 1,200 words (excluding title page, footnotes, bibliography, page and biography)<br \/>\u2022 First page must include the title<br \/>\u2022 No applicant information is on the essay pages<br \/>\u2022 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spaced<br \/>\u2022 Use 8 1\u20442\u201d by 11\u201d paper with 1\u201d margins on all sides<br \/>\u2022 Essay pages are numbered sequentially, starting with \u201c1\u201d \u2022 No graphics, special covers or bindings are allowed<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3) Bibliography pages \u2013 The bibliography must:<br \/>\u2022 Citations in the essay and references in the bibliography must be in accordance with a widely used, publicly available citation system (Examples include the Chicago Manual of Style, the MLA Manual of Style, &amp; the MHRA Style Guide)<br \/>\u2022 The bibliography must specify the system used<br \/>\u2022 No applicant information is in the bibliography<br \/>\u2022 Minimum of 5 references, 3 of which must be published works (encyclopedias or internet sources are acceptable but not considered part of the 3 published works)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4) Biography page \u2013 The biography must:<br \/>\u2022 Limited to one page.<br \/>\u2022 Includes academic awards and achievements, school activities, community activities, and plans for college.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Essays that meet the criteria above will be accepted and judged equally on the following criteria:<br \/>\u2022 Historical accuracy<br \/>\u2022 Clarity of thought<br \/>\u2022 Organization and proven topic<br \/>\u2022 Grammar and spelling<br \/>\u2022 Documentation<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Awards at the chapter level may vary. Missouri\u2019s state award is $500. Awards at the national level are as follows:<br \/>First place:<br \/>$5,000; a medal and recognition certificate; up to $500 toward travel expenses and one- night hotel stay for the winner and a chaperone at the annual SAR Congress.<br \/>Second Place:<br \/>$2,500 and a recognition certificate<br \/>Third Place:<br \/>$1,000 and a recognition certificate<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-5\">Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest is open to all High School Students (9th through 12th grades), attending Home Schools, Public Schools, Parochial Schools, or Private High Schools in the same grade range, who are interested in the American Revolution. Each Student\u2019s five-to-six-minute speech (and accompanying manuscript) will be judged, based on its composition, delivery, significance, and historical accuracy and relevance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants must write an original oration of<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>not less than five minutes or more than six minutes.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>The oration must be delivered from memory and without the use of notes or any kind of props. The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>subject of the oration shall deal with an event, a personality, or a document pertaining to the Revolutionary War with an emphasis on our nation\u2019s 250th-anniversary celebration.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>It is essential that each oration show the relationship it bears to America today. Evidence of historical research and creative presentation is also important. The oration will be judged based upon its composition, delivery, significance, historical accuracy, and relevance to our 250th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three cash\/scholarship awards are given:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the National First Place Winner receives $6,000;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the 2nd Place Runner-up receives $4,000;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and the 3rd Place Runner-up receives $2,000 cash prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each also receives an Olympic-sized medal. All other finalists (4th through 6th Place runners-up) are awarded $500 cash and all other national contestants are awarded $200 cash.
