How to Join
First and foremost, the SAR is a “lineage” society. Those who are members at the present have proven they descend directly from someone who supported the cause of the American Independence during the years 1774-1783. Support or aid can include military service, government service, providing supplies to the military, taking an oath of allegiance to the cause, and many other possibilities. Basically anything that helped further the cause of freedom and independence from the British rule.
To download an blank application, click here. Provide as much information on your lineage going back as much as possible Don’t stress out over the dates and places. Copy any documentation you can find that will connect the generations together. You will need copies of birth, death, and marriage records for the first couple of generations.
Bring these documents to one of our meetings, and the chapter genealogist will assist you in completing your application. Once completed, the application is submitted to National with the required fees (varies with chapters}. Final approval can take anywhere from 2-6 months.
